'Rats Like Us: Sculpting Collective Code'
2025
MDF & Plasticine.
This sculpture was formed in Wyse’s workshop during the Platform’s LIVE event at Modern Art Oxford. It is based on Wyse’s Installation ‘Where Humans Live, Rats Live’ investigating human anxiety caused by surveillance technology. Participants sculpted their own rats as a self-portrait representing themselves and placed it within a maze created by the artist.
The work is based around the idea that rats are representations of human ways of being and it suggests that the awareness of surveillance alters human behaviour in predictable ways, as it does with rats in controlled environments such as mazes.
The collaboration became a conceptual idea that the participants have allowed their data to be provided for others to see by incorporating their own data into the sculpture.
